Prison officers maintain security, manage prisoner behaviour, respond to incidents, supervise activities, and contribute to the rehabilitation of offenders. AI surveillance systems monitor prison areas more comprehensively than human CCTV monitoring — detecting incidents faster and tracking movement. These improve prison security without replacing officers.
But incident response — physically restraining a prisoner, managing a fight, conducting a cell search — requires human officers. The relationships prison officers develop with prisoners over time, central to effective rehabilitation programmes, cannot be built by AI. The UK Prison Service has 4,000 officer vacancies.
